Why is it pointless to set goals?

A signpost on Dartmoor that has fallen into the gorse

What direction are you heading in 2020?

For years I thought all that was required was to set my goal and then be committed to moving in the right direction. All I needed was action, positive thinking and good habits.

But I’ve come to see that the reality is less clear-cut. In fact the reality of goal-setting is a bit like this toppled signpost I came across on the moors. It got me thinking about my journey in 2020.

Where am I going?

I’m not entirely sure. I have a sense of the destination. However, like this signpost, maybe the direction won’t be all that clear.

It seems at the moment that I’m being drawn towards creating thriving communities, places that nourish young people. It appears that I will be experimenting with grass-roots community projects. It appears that the simplicity of the message of the Inner Compass, will continue to be at the heart of everything we do.

What is the Inner Compass message?

The Inner Compass is all about pointing people within and helping people to see their True Nature.

I came across this quote by Haemin Sunim, a Buddhist monk and I rather liked it:

“I wish you could see my true nature.
Beyond my body and labels,
there is a river of tenderness and vulnerability.
Beyond stereo-types and assumptions,
there is a valley of openess and authenticity.
Beyond memory and ego,
there is an ocean of awareness and compassion.”

My hunch is that if society starts to wake up, then we will naturally start to operate with collaboration and compassion. We will naturally support our fragile planet. We will naturally shun violence and seek paths of mutual benefit.

We don’t need more ‘stuff’ more money, more politics, more trade, more success – even the worthy causes of climate change, global warming, health care, solving poverty, stopping wars, human rights and education – they are all ultimately useless without a deeper dive into the truth of who we are.

Our world is crying out for a spiritual awakening – we are being called to see beyond the fearful masks, beyond our insecurities and to deeply understand our core of connection.

Join me during 2020 as I experiment with ideas and trial projects.
It’ll probably be messy and slow and frustrating at times – however I’ll share my progress at each stage of the journey. This is about unleashing our natural potential and starting to wake up to the deeper call within.
