Wellbeing Amidst Illness
December 9, 2019

This tree must have been toppled in a recent storm. It is partially rooted and some leaves are still clinging on. I saw it whilst out with Buzz and I stopped in my tracks. It reminded me of my dad.

A fallen tree that still has leaves on it and is partially rooted in the ground

Dad is still in hospital after fracturing his neck and then nearly dying from pneumonia; yet he is steadfastly holding on to life. He reminded me of this tree, this once magnificent tree, still clinging on, not ready to go.

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve witnessed the resilience of the human spirit – both in my dad, but also in our family and with friends.

On one occasion, when dad was at one of his lowest ebbs, I was sitting beside him trying to encourage him to swallow some tiny spoonfuls of yoghurt. It was like trying to feed a child. He didn’t recognise me (his dementia muddles his brain so much) and was speaking deliriously (probably the pneumonia). As I sat with him I couldn’t help but notice a deep love that seemed to connect us. In that moment I could sense my dad’s wellbeing.

We often talk about wellbeing in our work and how everyone has innate wellbeing. I know it can sound confusing and many people would question my dad’s wellbeing. Here he wass in hospital with a fractured neck, dementia and the remnants of pneumonia. However, I’m not talking about the physical shell of a body. When I speak of wellbeing I’m talking about the deeper energy of life itself.

Wellbeing is just a word that points to the spiritual life force that infuses us all. Those moments with dad have reminded me that our true nature is that of wellbeing, love and connection; this is the nature of the human spirit. Our bodies are just temporary vehicles that make us all seem separate individuals – we are not our bodies. We are created from the essence of life itself.

On the one hand dad is not and will never be the father I once knew (both his body and mind are greatly altered). The paradox is that on the other hand he still is and always will be the father I knew.

It is in the recognition of the life-energy itself that I have been able to touch the eternal space that unites us all. Dad is that life energy – as are we all.

It has been a huge gift to see this in my frail father and to know that ultimately we are all deeply OK.

I feel for you Liz. My heart is looking in this direction for comfort too, as my Father (always Daddy to me) died on May 26th. Since then I am waiting for the truth of the principles to reveal themselves, at a more than intellectual level. 90 minutes after he died I watched a kite play above my parent’s garden – it alighted in front of me, a mere couple of metres away, and looked into me. I had a profound sense it was the spirit of my Pa – and I have watched kites here at our home in Switzerland with a new feeling since. Knowing all along I am projecting my needs, feeling my personal thinking (not the universal stuff, an articulation of which I am yet to comprehend or feel) but gleaning comfort from the freedom I am watching anyway. Thank you for sharing your journey and love to your dear Pa x PS I would love to talk if you have time…
