The Real Purpose of Fear
January 15, 2020

Liz walking in the rain with her dogWhat’s the point of fearful and insecure thinking?

Yesterday, as a storm whipped through Devon it seemed to reflect my mood. We went walking in the gusty winds, blown along and battered by the rain. It was cold, wet and dark.

At the weekend, in bright sunshine and blue skies I’d walked with my family along the Templer Way.

Oh how quickly the weather changes. It reminds me of the ups and downs of the #ivybridgewellbeing project.

Last week I was buoyed with enthusiasm, on Monday, after my visit to the town I was sluggish low and despondant.

I was feeling particuluarly flat and helpless. The community seemed weighed down. There are people in mental distress and people with physical and mental challenges trying to carry on. They aren’t thriving they are barely surviving. There are volunteers working without money and without support to try and help others. It felt desperate.

During the evening I sat down with Stu and I shared my gloomy thoughts. I bemoaned that I had no influence, no voice, I couldn’t make a difference, the problem is endemic, no-one will listen to me …. on and on the story went.

Stu listened, he chipped in, he agreed – we got gloomy about the government, about politics and about the inability to make lasting change. We bemoaned the fact that ‘good people’ didn’t have a voice they aren’t heard – we feared that the masses were being kept down-trodden.

Then out of the blue Stu said something that stopped me in my tracks. I can’t exactly remember what it was, but it was something along the lines of us both getting lost in the story. The whirring, moaning story suddenly stopped. It was like a shaft of light was piercing through the gloom.
‘It’s not about the story,’ he reminded me. ‘This is about you getting in touch with your True Self.”

I wanted to laugh (that’s often what happens when an insight springs on you). Of course! Only last week I had realised that this Ivybridge 12-week experiment had nothing to do with wellbeing in Ivybridge and everything to do with me exploring my True Nature.

In this wonderful clarity, the clouds seemed to disappear and the gloom lifted.

My natural resourcefulness and creativity is now bubbling freely once more – I can feel a lightness within. Temporarily I was hypnotised by the story and then suddenly I woke up and I’m back once again, back in touch with my True Nature.

Will I ever learn? This is all about my exploration of the deeper spiritual essence and core of my being. The stories will try to seduce me away – my job is to keep remembering and allowing myself to recentre and rebalance again.

I’m still inspired to support Ivybridge and wellbeing in the town …. however there is a difference doing this from the lightness of True Nature and from the fear of insecure thinking and desperation.

And it’s also great to realise that even when fear laps at my feet again, I don’t need to run or hide, it is just a reminder to look within and to remember who I truly am.

Inspirational, Liz! I love how you explore the twists and turns of thinking, and your observations on how easy it is to become seduced by the story. As you so eloquently express, the story always has deeper layers of meaning.
