The Flourishing Listening Space

I’ve fallen in love with the hedgerows. On our walk each morning, I marvel at the array of spring flowers, plants, shrubs and leaves that have been emerging with such enthusiasm. I must have walked past the same hedges each and every day for the past 20 years – but this year they’ve drawn me in. I’ve photographed flowers and identified them, I’ve collected nettles and made soup, I’ve watched the birds sing in the trees and listened to the skylarks in the air above the moors. I’m struck at how beautiful and inspiring nature is.

Like many people during the pandemic, my work pattern has changed. Whilst for some life has become busier, for me I’ve found a slower rhythm to life. I’ve dug the garden, planted seeds and I’ve written letters. We’ve made bread, baked scones and felt immense joy at cooking meals from scratch. What’s more I’ve felt deep gratitude at living in such a beautiful part of the world at such a challenging time.

Life is no longer busy in the same way and I’ve started to notice the things that matter most – like family, connection, supporting neighbours, laughter, fresh air and love are actually the things that are most nourishing and sustaining.

I’ve also noticed that I have wobbles. There are days I’m sad or feel lost. There are days I desperately miss my loved ones, I long for hugs, walks and laughter. Everyone has good and bad days – we all have ups and downs. It’s good to know that our moods are a fleeting experience, they don’t represent who we truly are.

When we start to experience our true nature we feel a freedom and ease. When we start to realise we aren’t the limitations, the frustrations and the nagging voice in our heads, when we see beyond our mental suffering and mental pain towards the ever-present knowing space of clarity and peace – that’s when we experience a deep connection with our true being.

From this space of beingness our natural wellbeing, compassion, creativity, fun and love emerges with the same rigour as the growth of plants in the hedges. We realise that we don’t have to try to be happy or peaceful and we don’t need to try to fix our thinking. We start to see that who we are is the very thing we are looking for.

Listening for our wellbeing and then listening out for the wellbeing in our fellow humans is the same as listening out for our true nature. In this context when I talk about ‘wellbeing’ I’m referring to the natural space of creativity, love, resilience and compassion that is at the core of all of us.

As we emerge from Covid lockdown I don’t want things to return back to how they were. I don’t want to become lost in busy thinking, I don’t want to mindlessly buy food and cook meals as if they are a chore. I don’t want to go back to jumping in my car to go and ‘do’ something and be somewhere else. I don’t want to lose sight of nature’s beauty.

If you want to experience natural wellbeing for yourself, to be recharged and nourished with it, then join us as we explore community wellbeing. When we start listening for wellbeing – the wellbeing within – then we start to naturally create a thriving community.
