Teenage Wellbeing
February 23, 2020

I was listening to an old audio recording today and it touched me deeply.

The recording was a ‘fly-on-the-wall’ recording with a group of young people in a school. It was the first time I’d shared the Inner Compass with teenagers.

I came across the recording by chance, I’d forgotten it had been recorded.

It was so incredible hearing their wisdom and intuition as they talked about their innate wellbeing and resilience.

The teenagers shared how their beliefs and fears sometimes crowded their heads. They explained how they could see that at their core they are settled clarity and wisdom.

I remembered when we first saw them they were so caught up in an unhealthy norm of stress and anxiety.

They were worried about exams and homework and friendship groups and the future.

As we shared the wellbeing message they were staring to see that they were deeply OK. They didn’t need to believe their frightening thinking.

As I listened to them it struck me that I would so love to do a fly-on-the-wall podcast following a group as they explored the Inner Compass understanding.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to really see the journey of a group of young people as they started to see that they were deeply OK? What difference would that make in their lives?

The idea of a podcast may or may not happen. I’m well used to creativity rising within me in the form of different ideas.

What I am so grateful for, when listening to the youngsters on this recording, is that the work we’re doing in schools is making a difference. It’s easy for me to beat myself up or to question whether this work is having any impact at all.

Those voices from that project 2 years ago have reminded me about my passion.

I am drawn to building communities founded on wellbeing, that is the work I’m so inspired by.

A recent podcast is also worth catching. It’s with a Deputy Headteacher who is focussing on transforming school communities.

Russell Pearson would love to reach out to staff, children and parents. As he says in the podcast: “We could really so something here to change lives”
