Seeing Through Moods

Dartmoor is sodden.

Walking through this peat-saturated, wellie-boot sucking wetness is slow.

This November the weather is flinging everything out; from sun to hail to rain to gales. As sharp hard autumn storms race through, rainbows are aplenty in this fast-changing display of weather.

It is a slowly darkening world of contrasts as we transition closer to winter.

It’s often a sprint to return home as I squeeze in the final hours of light before the darkness fully falls.

I’ve noticed my moods have been as varied as the weather.

Days go by when a flat greyness seems to drag my progress, then suddenly sunshine and blue skies, a lightness, a rush of activity a sense of embracing life.

Before I understood the Inner Compass my agitated moods would have confused me. I would have tried hard to fix myself, to be positive, to try harder.

When my moods lifted I would have clung on to this lighter sense of self, fearful that it might slip away.

Now, a bit like the passing weather up on Dartmoor, I observe these moods. They come and they go. Some days I feel I can take on the world and on other days I want to hide under the duvet.

Last night, as I watched the rising moon, I was in one of those sluggish, flat moods.

The moon was nearly full and looked ethereal through the misty high clouds. It was so beautiful I stopped to drink it in.

I knew I was deeply OK as I looked at that moon. My ‘flat’ state of mind meant it was harder to hear the deeper call within, but the call was there none-the-less. The callreminds me of who I am. Regardless of my moods, I can always feel my soul reaching out.

Today my mood has lifted, it is like the sun has broken through. There is a lightness to everything I do. There is no need to grasp onto this lightness, or try to bottle what I feel.

I am not my mood, I am that which observes my mood. The eternal presence of now

Isn’t it good to know that we are more than our moods?
