Podcast 36 Cancer and Wellbeing Listening
December 15, 2020

What is it like to live without fear?

Imagine that. Imagine walking through the world without listening to and answering the whispering fears, shoulds and shouldn’t that populate your head. What freedom!

Recently Sarah Tyers experienced several months of living without fear and she discovered that life was a playground.

For someone with cancer and who at one point feared she might just 12 months to live – living fearlessly seems a contradiction. How can you face death and yet not be scared?

Yet Sarah attributes her incredible psychological freedom to her journey with cancer. When she saw through and beyond the stories she was telling herself about the disease she saw something that struck her keenly:

“It was pivotal seeing the love in myself and realising I was already a radiant human being.”

Sarah and I discuss the power of listening for wellbeing. We can listen for wellbeing even if the person in front of us is seriously ill. When we listen out for the resilience in the other person – we are seeing who they truly are.

Thank you for bringing me hope, inspiration and beautiful guidance on how to navigate my cancer journey. The themes you covered feel well worn for me, and I have spent many hours sitting with my fears and allowing them to pass. Yet my chronic anxiety persists. Thanks to what you have shared I realise how much I was still making my diagnosis my fault, and take the approach of “I need to fix this”. Feeling other people’s fear is hard and makes me be secretive. I will be listening to this podcast over and again. I so want to allow my own needs to be the ones I listen to and act on. Thank you for the gifts of freedom and total self love.
