How can the traumatic issue of suicide be expressed in art?

It’s a question that artist Carly Jones has been answering over the past two years.

Her MA art project took a complete change of direction when a family member took his own life.

This suicide had a severe impact on the whole family and in particular Carly’s partner Damon. He found himself re-experiencing a severe episode of PTSD and struggling with his mental health.

Both Damon and Carly found significant relief when they came across the Inside Out understanding.

Carly’s art project is an exploration between the stark, sad statistics of suicide, along with the hopeful message of innate wellbeing and resilience.

    What a great way to raise awareness of suicide which can be such a difficult subject to talk about. Like Carly, I’ve experienced losing a family member to suicide and the wellbeing ambassador training has been so helpful to me in dealing with this. Liz I can remember speaking with you about this and how helpful it was to see this from an inside out perspective. I’ve gained a new understanding of this and have more peace now. Thank you 🙏💜

    Brilliant! I have so enjoyed this podcast – which sounds strange given such a challenging subject as suicide..what a fantastic art piece that will surely get people having conversations that transform lives.. Just how do we help others or ourselves in this situation ? The inner compass explanations of “inside out “ on this podcast helped me glimpse through a real life example something so simple yet so profound way about how we can powerfully support our own mental wellbeing and point others to supporting their own too. It’s feels to me like this way of looking at ourselves puts us back in touch with ‘solid ground’ and the freedom to be ok. Thanks for this wee gem!
