Liminal Spaces
April 5, 2020

Spring 2020 feels like a liminal space.

As we enter the second week of these extraordinary times, there is a quality of the unknown about life. At some point in the future, we will look back at this time with the hindsight. We will interpret it from the context of information and data that we currently don’t have. We will sagely judge what we did or didn’t do and comment on the emerging patterns that we presently cannot see because we are still swimming amongst them.

At the moment, we don’t have that knowledge. This is the in-between moment, the transition phase, the space that links before and after (although we don’t know what after actually is). It is like the pause between breaths, the moment prior to the conductor’s baton falling, the whole world seems poised at a junction.

This space has given me the chance to reflect more deeply. To notice the thoughts of self that rise and fall. This week my emotions have run raw and bleeding with sadness, they have sparkled with gratitude and joy, they have sat contented as I observe that beauty of the landscape that I live in.

A quote by Mooji hit me between the eyes. It was so simple and at another time on another day would have passed me by. He said:

“The self that thinks it is having a bad day is also a thought.”

When we strip away the countless layers of self-identity, the concepts and ideas of who and what we are, what is left? This is something that I’ve been reflecting on over the past few days.

As my life falls into a slower, more simple routine – there seems to be such a blessing that I am able to lightly reflect on the ultimate enquiry or who and what I truly am.

This is the benefit of the liminal space.
