What is the Ivybridge Wellbeing project?

The Ivybridge Wellbeing project started as a 3-month experiment at the beginning of January 2020 and has now been extended for another 6-months. Here is a photo of me in January beside the iconic Ivy Bridge that the town is name after.

We’d had a bit of a challenging year in 2019 what with my husband having open-heart surgery and then my dad fracturing his neck and spending 6 weeks in hospital.

It meant that my world, which had been outward facing and work-focussed, changed direction. Suddenly my focus and attention was on supporting my husband and dad with their recovery.

My priorities in 2019 were simple – family comes first.

As we turned the corner to 2020 I was ready to re-engage in the world of work. My diary was empty, so I reflected on how/what to do. From a settled space of curiosity an idea arose about my local community Ivybridge. I asked myself the question:

“What would it be like to live in in a town where we had the time and energy to connect with friends, family and the wider community?”

This is when I realised I wanted to get to know my community better

How did it start?

On the morning of January 1st I sat down with a cup of coffee to tell Stu my plan of exploring wellbeing in my local community. I didn’t know where to start or what to do.

There was a recognition that I knew little or nothing about wellbeing in Ivybridge so the 3-month experiment needed to start out with some research.

In January and February I spent time exploring my community, meeting people and learning about what residents thought about wellbeing, what kinds of community groups were running and what people loved about their community.

What did I learn about my community?

I started off with some pre-conceived ideas about the community.

Ivybridge is a great town with lots of amenities but it is not a pretty touristy town like many others in the area. There are around 12,000 residents and good schools, doctors, dentists, vets, supermarkets and other shops. There’s a leisure centre, library and multi-purpose venue-space which includes a cinema.

What became abundantly clear was that the community was awash with good-hearted people who were providing dozens of services, groups and support to hundreds of people in the town. Wellbeing was alive and thriving in Ivybridge and so many people were contributing to the vibe of the town.

I fell in love with Ivybridge. I was so proud to be part of this town.

What could I offer?

Ivybridge didn’t need another community group – there were so many in operation. There was no need for a wellbeing group.

However, it became clear that there was something I could offer the community leaders that were running these groups. I could share the Inner Compass philosophy of wellbeing. In very simple terms there are two parts to this philosophy:

1. Wellbeing is In-built to our psychology
2. Wellbeing can be clouded by thoughts and feelings, but wellbeing cannot be damaged

As I started to formulate some ideas around sharing this, the world went in to Covid lockdown.

What happened with the Covid Lockdown and the Wellbeing Project?

Things changed gear in mid-March as the UK went into lockdown. A clear message was issued from the Government about staying at home. People were furloughed as their jobs were moth-balled. Only essential, key workers were able to return to work.

This is when the idea of providing some online webinars emerged and the Wellbeing Listener project was born.

What are Wellbeing Listeners?

Stu and I wondered what it would be like if we could support parents, families, charity workers, educators, health professionals around listening for wellbeing. We were curious about sharing this very simple idea about listening for wellbeing.

When people stop listening out to the story, beliefs, insecurities and fears – and instead listen out to the resilience and wellbeing within – then conversations can become incredibly nourishing.

So far dozens of people have engaged in the in the introductory webinar and the longer 1-month programme.

We will continue to grow and spread this programme online via zoom. We are also planning to provide bespoke opportunities for Inside-Out practitioners who aren’t confident about sharing the Inside-Out understanding and are keen to find their own voice. Follow this link for more information.

    Dear Liz
    Can I sign up to this please? How much will it cost? It will be useful for me on my learning journey, and particularly as it’s on-line in the current isolation climate.

    I have so much to learn, am reading/studying 3Ps books, listening to yourself and Stu and watching videos etc. Have my name down for Ottery St Mary (whenever it goes ahead).
