Jessica Shipp Community Connector

Jessica Shipp is the Community Connector in Ivybridge. We met for a cup of tea early in 2020, prior to the COVID lockdown. Jessica was new to her job at the time and we fell into an easy conversation around our mutual passion of community wellbeing.

Her role involves supporting people experiencing social isolation and she also collaborates with existing community groups within the town.

Jessica loves connecting with people. I was one of the many that she met as she learned who was who in the town.

Her role suddenly changed as lockdown started. Suddenly her face-to-face work disappeared. There was a huge influx of volunteers and she began co-ordinating these new local volunteers as they supported  the vulnerable, house-bound and self-isolating members of the community.

Now her job was centred at her home. She was on the computer and phone all day and she found it was hard to switch off. Her children interrupted her and her new ‘office’ was her bedroom. The boundaries of work and homelife were blurred.

She joined our Wellbeing Listener Programme in June. She had expected the impact to be mainly with her work clients, but was delighted that she noticed things changing at home:

“I have learnt to appreciate that others may well be having a bad day whilst I am having a good day, and this has helped me to appreciate other people’s perspective and reactions. I cannot stress how much this has helped me and how much I have learnt. My relationships have improved with my husband and children and in times of conflict I don’t react nearly as much as I used to.”

It wasn’t just at home – Jessica started noticing how she was listening differently to people:

“There has been an enormous and positive impact in terms of my work and also my personal relationships. I have learnt to listen for listening sake, rather than listening to answer.”

Jessica goes on to say that her interactions at her workplace are much richer since going on the course:

“Relationships with clients are much deeper and they open up much more than they did before. I’m convinced this is because of the way I am listening to them – and just letting them talk rather than listening to respond, which was always my default prior to coming on the course.”

In this short 1 minute video clip Jessica shares more about what has changed for her.

Jessica loved the Wellbeing Listener Foundation training so much she repeated the training 3 months later.

“I cannot stress how much this has helped me and how much I have learnt. An absolutely unbelievable course.”

One of the aspects of the Wellbeing Listening Foundation Programme is that it is very simple to understand. There are no techniques or strategies. This simplicity of the training makes it easy to grasp and Jessica sees that it is something that would be beneficial for many people in the wider community. In this 1 minute video clip she says the Wellbeing Listener Foundation is easy and very powerful

We’re delighted that Jessica is now on the 6-month Community Listener programme. During this time she will start up a project involving wellbeing listening in the community.
