Everyday Magic

purple flowers in a wildflower meadow

When I was a child everything was magic and possible. Fairies lived in the garden, ghosts left messages from the afterworld, wardrobes were gateways to visit other lands, chairs could fly, trees were castles, streams were trekking expeditions and animals were able to talk.

Back then magic was ordinary and every day.

I remember when my brother cared for a Swallowtail caterpillar, and we watched this creature turn to a chrysalis then emerge as a stunning butterfly. It lazily stretched and dried its wings in the sunshine on my brother’s hand before taking flight on the wind.

As children we instinctively knew that magic and mystery was everywhere, we didn’t need to prove it, or explain it, or do research on it. We just knew it.

Somewhere along the way, this soft silk veil of possibility hardened and was replaced by a wall; as the stirring sense of wonder faded the practicalities of adulthood took over.

As I look back I realise a part of me has been mourning that loss ever since.

However recently, like the caterpillar in its chrysalis I feel my world is transitioning – taking on a different form. I’m now in my 50’s and an ember is re-igniting. I’ve once again caught sight, from the corner of my eye, of that fluttering silky veil; the possibility of magic and mystery is filling me once more.

The mystery might no longer appear as pixies or elves – instead this magic creeps up and envelopes me in awe.

Out of the blue I am filled with utter joy at watching the swaying grasses in our wildflower meadow in the village. Time stops as I spy a cloud of meadow brown butterflies that dance across my path. Or when I watch a brave robin bobbing beside my garden chair and I hold my breath, fearful of breaking the spell.

Magic has always been present in nature and for many years I’ve been asleep – but now I am stirring and becoming aware of this ever-present wonderment.
