“I’ve now stopped trying to be a fixer and my listening skills are much improved. The impact for me personally has been huge.” (Parent: Ivybridge)

“I seem to be more relaxed, calmer and have more understanding. I have learned that I cannot solve someone else’s problems, but I can let them know that I have listened to them and that I do understand what they are saying.” (Carer: Ivybridge)

“Knowing that I don’t have to solve problems has improved listening with everyone I have spoken to. Listening well is enough and it takes the pressure out of a conversation where I would’ve been thinking about what I can do and how I can help.” (Educator)

Community Listener

Put your Wellbeing Listener skills to use and deepen your own understanding of how to facilitate sustainable change. As you practice within your community you’ll help others get in touch with their innate resilience.

More information

What is a Community Listener?

A Community Listener is someone who is able to tap into the pre-existing strength and resilience in their community. As a Community Listener, you will hone your ability to explore and highlight the innate wellbeing and resilience that is often overlooked. Whilst providing support for others you’ll simultaneously enhance your ability to listen out for your own deeper intelligence and true nature. As a Community Listener, you will deepen your understanding around the power of listening for wellbeing.

What do we mean by Community?

A Community Listener (CL) will develop a relationship within their existing community and run a project throughout the 6-month programme that becomes their case study. As a CL the community you choose to work with might be:

  • Family or friends
  • Workplace colleagues
  • Hobby or community group
  • Existing clients
  • Volunteers
  • School

You will work with your mentor to explore what your project might look like. It can be with several people or just a few people. The project will focus on listening – as a CL you will become a listener for people in your community. The project is a vehicle for you to develop your ability to listen and to build connected relationships.

A Fresh Way For Communities to Blossom

The Community Listener Programme is a way of blowing on the spark of existing wellbeing and resilience. The CL is starting to explore and share a sustainable and wholesome model of community development. As more and more people within a community wake up to the power of being heard and of recognising their own in-built wellbeing – then the community as a whole will experience greater resilience.

Who is it for?

This is a perfect opportunity for people who would like to lead on a Wellbeing Listening project in their community. It might be a listening project with a group of people (like in a school) or it might be something you want to provide for your family or friends. This project is a great fit for:

  • Community Connectors
  • Community Builders
  • Social Prescribers
  • Educators
  • Businesses
  • Community Group Leaders
  • Parents
  • Carers
  • Charities
  • Social Enterprises

The 6-month programme will include the following (please note we may adjust topics depending on the nature of each group)

6 x 1.5hr training webinar workshops from Liz and Stu covering topics like:

  • Starting your project: You’ll start to explore who you might work with over the next 6 months. You’ll be reminded of the Wellbeing Listener Foundation learning.
  • The power of listening: What is listening? Why is it so powerful? What are the key qualities of a good listener?
  • Who am I? What is the difference between true self and separate self? How does the ego trip us up and trick us? What happens when we shine a light on who we truly are?
  • So What? We explore the impact of reflecting on true self and true nature. We see how this plays out in our own lives and with others.
  • Being v Doing: What happens when people in communities start to engage in ‘being’ rather than constantly ‘doing’? Is ‘being’ and ‘presence’ the bit that is missing in our communities?
  • Project Consolidation: We embed learning, investigate sustainability and celebrate progress. Community Listeners share their learning and we look at ‘what next’.

Other elements of the training include:

  • 6 x 1hr mentoring sessions with your own mentor
  • 2 x 1hr group mentoring sessions with Liz and Stu
  • Recommended online resources and reading materials.
  • Guest speakers or special podcast recordings.

Further Time Commitment:

  • Running a Wellbeing Project: This might be through your existing client base (so no additional time is required) or you might embark on a project, event or on-going conversation that is in addition to your day-to-day routine.
  • Reflective case-study: This is your wellbeing project. It can be presented through photos, video, audio or blogging. This is a commitment of around half an hour a week to keep a reflective record/journal of your project.
  • Final case study: This will be created in a format that can be published and will provide the highlights/learning of your project. 500-1000 words. Or you might use an audio or video case-study to highlight your project. Or you might engage in art/poetry or other way to present your case study.

Sharing the Inner Compass with others

Inner Compass Facilitator

If you’d like to share the Inside-Out understanding more widely then this blended programme of coaching/mentoring and shadowing will help you find your voice and style.

More information

This coaching and mentoring programme (with a small group of fellow participants) gives you a unique opportunity to develop as an Inner Compass Facilitator, working alongside Stu Newberry and Liz Scott. This programme is founded on the Inside-Out understanding.

Would you like to share the Inside-Out understanding in groups or with individuals? Many people who have been impacted by the Inside-Out understanding are drawn to share it more widely – but don’t know how. Some of the most common concerns are:

  • What do I say?
  • How do others share the Inside-Out understanding with those new to it?
  • What if I’m asked a difficult question?
  • How do others share this understanding with people who’ve never come across it before?

Liz and/or Stu will provide you with behind-the-scenes access to their Wellbeing Listener training (it’s online) – you can shadow them as they provide training and learn how and why they deliver and share their materials in the way they do.

You will participate in the Wellbeing Listener training as a mentor and small-group facilitator. You’ll learn experientially whilst under the close guidance of Liz and Stu – this is a perfect opportunity to find your own voice whist supporting others developing their community projects.

You will be encouraged to run a workshop or event as part of your development; this might be something in your community or workplace. Liz and Stu will be on hand to stand alongside you (if this is online)

During this programme you will:

  • Develop your grounding: The foundation for an inspiring facilitator is that they first have a grounded understanding of the Inner Compass (aka Inside-Out understanding)
  • Find your voice: You will be encouraged to find your voice through creating articles, blogging, videos and/or podcasts to share your insights about the Inner Compass.
  • Participate in shadow training: This is a unique opportunity to sit in on training and to see what goes on behind the scenes in preparation and follow-up. Liz and Stu will be on hand to answer your questions and queries
  • Receive 1:1 mentoring/coaching/supervision: Liz and/or Stu will support you with individual and personal coaching/mentoring as you develop your own voice and style of delivery
  • Participate in group mentoring: You’ll be part of a small group and will hear from other participants as they progress on their learning journey
  • Participate in a retreat: The cost of the retreat will be in addition to the training – but you will have the opportunity to discover how retreats are run and how they are facilitated (subject to availability)
  • Receive support to design your own workshop: Liz and/or Stu will be on hand to support you in the design and in some cases (if it’s online) to support you with the delivery of a workshop or programme
  • Get online support: You will have online support and will be pointed to podcasts, videos and articles. Liz and Stu will reflect on your progress on this personalised online platform

This programme runs in parallel with the Community Listener and Wellbeing Listener Programmes. You will be expected to engage with these programmes in order to facilitate and mentor participants. This is part of your growth and development as an Inner Compass facilitator.

This 6-month programme costs £1650.
