Community Listener Programme
September 12, 2021
What is a Community Listener?

A Community Listener is someone who is able to tap into the pre-existing strength and resilience in their community. As a Community Listener, you will hone your ability to explore and highlight the innate wellbeing and resilience that is often overlooked. Whilst providing support for others you’ll simultaneously enhance your ability to listen out for your own deeper intelligence and true nature. As a Community Listener, you will deepen your understanding around the power of listening for wellbeing.

What do we mean by Community?

A Community Listener (CL) will develop a relationship within their existing community and run a project throughout the 6-month programme that becomes their case study. As a CL the community you choose to work with might be:
• Family or friends
• Workplace colleagues
• Hobby or community group
• Existing clients
• Volunteers
• School

You will work with your mentor to explore what your project might look like. It can be with several people or just a few people. The project will focus on listening – as a CL you will become a listener for people in your community. The project is a vehicle for you to develop your ability to listen and to build connected relationships.

A Fresh Way For Communities to Blossom

The Community Listener Programme is a way of blowing on the spark of existing wellbeing and resilience. The CL is starting to explore and share a sustainable and wholesome model of community development. As more and more people within a community wake up to the power of being heard and of recognising their own in-built wellbeing – then the community as a whole will experience greater resilience.

Who is it for?

This is a perfect opportunity for people who would like to lead on a Wellbeing Listening project in their community. It might be a listening project with a group of people (like in a school) or it might be something you want to provide for your family or friends. This project is a great fit for:
• Community Connectors
• Community Builders
• Social Prescribers
• Educators
• Businesses
• Community Group Leaders
• Parents
• Carers
• Charities
• Social Enterprises

The 6-7 month programme will include the following (please note we may adjust topics depending on the nature of each group)

6 x 2hr training webinar workshops from Liz and Stu covering topics like:
  • Starting your project: You’ll start to explore who you might work with over the next 6 months. You’ll be reminded of the Wellbeing Listener Foundation learning.
  • The power of listening: What is listening? Why is it so powerful? What are the key qualities of a good listener?
  • Who am I? What is the difference between true self and separate self? How does the ego trip us up and trick us? What happens when we shine a light on who we truly are?
  • So What? We explore the impact of reflecting on true self and true nature. We see how this plays out in our own lives and with others.
  • Being v Doing: What happens when people in communities start to engage in ‘being’ rather than constantly ‘doing’? Is ‘being’ and ‘presence’ the bit that is missing in our communities?
  • Project Consolidation: We embed learning, investigate sustainability and celebrate progress. Community Listeners share their learning and we look at ‘what next’.

Other elements of the training include:
  •  6 x 1hr mentoring sessions with your own mentor (these might be group or individual)
  • 2 x 1hr group mentoring sessions with Liz and Stu
  • Recommended online resources and reading materials.
  • Guest speakers or special podcast recordings.
Further Time Commitment:
  • Running a Wellbeing Project: This might be through your existing client base (so no additional time is required) or you might embark on a project, event or on-going conversation that is in addition to your day-to-day routine
  • Reflective case-study: This is your wellbeing project. It can be presented through photos, video, audio or blogging. This is a commitment of around half an hour a week to keep a reflective record/journal of your project.
  • Final case study: This will be created in a format that can be published and will provide the highlights/learning of your project. 500-1000 words. Or you might use an audio or video case-study to highlight your project. Or you might engage in art/poetry or other way to present your case study.
